Creative Europe MEDIA fund for Games at our July 6th 2021 meetup

RSVP: https://www.meetup.com/1GAM-Galway/events/zjvcvrycckbjb/

At our July meetup, our topic of discussion is the Creative Europe MEDIA fund. Irish game developers have been successfully applying for this fund for years to develop commercial game projects with a narrative focus.

Our meetup will feature:

  • Eibhlín Ní Mhunghaile, from the Creative Europe MEDIA Desk in Galway, Ireland. who will provide information about the fund, the application process, and will answer your questions.
  • Sam Redfern, from Psychic Software, will be discusing his experience applying for the fund for his upcoming game The Necromancer’s Tale.

1GAM Galway will take place as a virtual gathering on the Discord server for Galway Game Jam. See the meetup link above for details.

In general we share gamedev projects and experiments, get feedback, and have general gamedev chats. Given that this meetup is more focussed on the Creative Europe MEDIA fund, and funding in general, we will run this segment later in the evening only if we have time left.

Open to game makers of all levels. (You must be 18 years or older to participate in the Galway Game Jam discord server.)

Please be respectful and understand that on any given meetup it may be the first time a person has playtested their game. We encourage constructive criticism – since everyone here makes games it is a unique opportunity to get insights that regular play doesn’t offer. That said, please respect the game maker. Ask first before sharing your critique and suggestions. Thank you!

* Present talks about all aspects of game development.

December meetup featuring presentation by Joshua Daly and playtest Fung’s Tale a card game by Nightbeca

This 1GAM meetup will feature two community members.

* Joshua Daly will be giving a featured presentation titled: “Building your own Game Engine”.

Josh, a long-time community member and co-organiser of 1GAM, will be sharing what he has learned from developing “RPG Wizard”. RPG Wizard is a 2D RPG game engine designed for making games similar to retro JRPGs; like early Final Fantasy series games, Secret of Mana, and Zelda: Link to the Past. RPG Wizard has a small active community and traces it’s roots to a time before Unity and RPG Maker where viable options for small indie developers. Expect some gems of wisdom here! A short Q&A session will follow the presentation.

* Nightbeca will be playtesting her untitled card game prototype currently in development.

Nightbeca is an artist and game maker who recently moved to Galway and quickly discovered our gamedev community through participating in Galway Game Jam 15. What better way to welcome a new member of the community than to playtest their games!

Playtesting session will start shortly after the presentation. It’s casual and you are welcome to bring your own projects for playtesting.

March Meetup – Featuring talks from Paul Conway and Alan Preims

In Our March meetup, Paul Conway (Spookey Doorway, DoomCube) will give a short presentation on his takeaways from his companies application to the Creative Media Europe Fund.

This fund has very strict eligibility criteria. The current application deadline has now passed, but it’s not time to give up. Paul Conway will arm you with the knowledge he has gained about the process, so you can ensure your eligibility for the next round of funding applications, and take steps to strengthen your application.

Alan Priems, an entrepreneur and composer, will be giving a presentation on “Sonic Hooks”, his business project with the New Frontiers program. Alan will explain what Sonic Hooks is and how it is helping to solve a problem faced by game developers and videographers in sourcing high quality, unique music compositions for their projects.

We will be showcasing our local game developer game projects after the talks, and maybe get some pizza!

See you there!

Jades, Obstacles and Pizza – Nov 2018

This evening’s meetup featured:

  • Jades – a game which Josh is working on using RPG Wizard, Josh’s pet project HTML5/JS game engine.
  • Obstacles – which Darren made at the last UL Gamejam.
  • welcoming a new member to the group, and
  • Woozza pizza!

During today’s meet up we played each others games and discussed a bunch of topics.

Obstacles - High Score table at the 1GAM Galway November 2018 meetup Josh playing some Jades Gad, Patrick and Josh at 1GAM Galway November 2018 meetup. Gad playing Obstacles, Patrick and Josh at 1GAM Galway November 2018 meetup. Gad, Patrick and Josh at 1GAM Galway November 2018 meetup.

Notably we chatted about game engines, recent game industry news surrounding the fan reaction to Activision Blizzard’s accouncement of Diablo Immortal, and what each of us are focusing on learning next.

We also talked a little about about health and well-being among developers, how to avoid neck and shoulder injuries from using computers for extended periods.

As an important aside, Gad clearly achieved the Obstacles top score for the night. Congrats!

See you again for the next meetup on Dec 4th.
